Youth Chorale and the combined Concert Choirs performed in a once-in-a-lifetime event over the weekend, singing in Mahler 8 with the Zelman Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mark Sheill. It was a massive event, and one that the choristers will never forget.

Thanks to all choristers, staff and parents for doing the choir proud.

Oasis Camp in Mt Evelyn was the setting for our camp once again, with great food and activities, and brilliant staff in the form of John and Rhonda Kroon. Our thanks to them for yet another great camp.

As usual a lot of repertoire could be covered, especially everyone's fave, Mahler. A lot of fun had by all.

Southern Voices in Concert

23 Jun 2013

Mid-Year concert time again, and for the second year we performed in the Auburn Uniting Church with its spectacular choral acoustics and wonderful surroundings.

This year saw the premiere of a "The Coffee Song," written for the choir by Andrew. We were also treated to an appearance by Versatile, whose choice of songs is exactly that.

Big thanks to Sally, Marita, Dan, Cam, Jenny and Sharon for their hard work, and to all Youth Chorale choristers who helped in various capacities.

ACCord 2013

22 Jun 2013

The Southern Voices Training choirs were invited to perform at this year's ACCord concert, organised by the Australian Children's Choir.

This year the venue was the One Community Church in Blackburn, a modern and colourful setting. Our young choristers sang well and, most importantly, had a great time. It is performances like these that build up a chorister's experience, so that after promotion to Concert Choir and beyond they are used to singing well anywhere, anytime.

Concert for Liv

28 Apr 2013

A large and appreciative audience attended the Youth Chorale's Concert for Liv at Wellington Secondary College. Many individual members of the choir were involved in smaller items, and as a whole the concert was a fitting tribute to Liv.

The money raised from ticket sales will go directly to the Reach Foundation, an organisation making a positive impact in the lives of young Australians.

A special thanks to Julian for working hard to organise things, Wellington Secondary for their donation of the use of the theatre, and everyone else involved for their efforts.

Information nights

25-26 Mar 2013

Monbulk and Mentone held information nights in the final week of term. As always a group of interested potential choristers gathered to join in the fun, and to see the benefits of a choral experience.

The buildings at both venues are relatively new, and easy to use for our choir.

A big thank you to Karen, Tash, Cameron, Julian and Sally for your efforts - and of course Sharon!

Youth Chorale workshop

3 Mar 2013

Youth Chorale members got the chance to sing for a whole day on Sunday, working on repertoire for various upcoming performances in a workshop held at the Dandenong Ranges Music Council building in Upwey.

Like the summer workshop last year, this intense rehearsal allowed the group to devote a large amount of time to many different pieces, and the effect of the day will be felt throughout the year.

Venue move

4 Feb 2013

Southern Voices Keysborough venue will now operate out of St Bede's College, Mentone. Choristers in the Keysborough Concert Choir can try Rowville or Berwick, and some have been promoted to Youth Chorale.

This change has been made for a variety of reasons, and we thank Cameron especially for his help in organising St Bedes as our new location. Cameron and Julian will be running the Training Choirs at the venue. We look forward to a long and enoyable relationship with the school.

Knox Carols

1 Dec 2012

After the traditional rain, Knox Carols was a great success. All involved had a good time, and many parents stayed to see the show. Santa made an appearance, along with some of Australia's best singing talents.

It is exciting for the choir to be involved in such a large event each year, and we look forward to the next one. Although the administration of the event has changed over the years, we are continually asked back to perform at the next one.

This is a tribute to the behaviour and quality of our choristers.

Southern Voices Annual Concert

20 Oct 2012

"Songs from Here and There" was a great success, and marked the choir's first concert at the Besen Centre. A full house were appreciative of each choir, solo items and even a visit from supergroup 1V.

The concert also saw the debut performance of our Parents and Friends Choir, some original music from various choristers and a Chinese dragon. Having this concert earlier this year means the choristers can concentrate on the Christmas season, which this year includes some 10 performances.

Thanks to all staff and volunteers who were involved on the day.

ACCord Concert

9 Sep 2012

All Training and Concert Choir choristers participated in the Australian Children's Choir ACCird concert this year. This concert allows the choristers to hear other choirs, which is always an educational experience.

The concert was a long one, and we want to thank all parents and staff involved for their efforts. The length of the Festival depends on how many choirs can attend each year, and it was truly a large event this year.

For some of the Training Choir choristers, this occasion marked their first performance with Southern Voices. So congratulations to them!

South Street

26 Aug 2012

The Youth Chorale won the "a cappella" section of the South Street Eisteddfod, and also gained a second place and honourable mention in other categories. The music was well received and the adjudicators made some favourable comments.

Many parents were in the audience, and just for once the weather provided a great day for a drive.

Level 3 and 4 camp

17-19 Aug 2012

Oasis camp site has been expanded, and we made full use of the facilities. All Concert Choirs and Youth Chorale participated in a successful camp that had all the regular features: new songs, Saturday day campers, fun activities and a special wake up call in the morning.

We were especially priviledged to have a visit from pop supergroup 1V, along with some screaming fans. A big thank you to the staff, and the Oasis staff who make it such a great place to be. A special thank you to the Youth Chorale too, for singing my music, I appreciate it

80s Disco

3 Aug 2012

The Rowville venue became a time machine as Eighties songs, dancing and extreme fashions(!) were on display. It was totally rad, and it's always interesting to see what younger people think us oldies were actually wearing back then...

Thanks to all staff and choristers who helped organise and run the event. A special thank you to Chris Kovac our DJ, with his helper Merwin M.

We have moved!

1 Jul 2012

Southern Voices has moved office to 39 Westerfield Drive, Notting Hill.

The new office space suits the organisation better, is in a nice location and will make a fitting home for the Choir for a long time.

My special thanks to several helpers who could come on the day, and especially to Barry Leggett for his truck, efforts and time. Many, many thanks to all involved!

Southern Voices in Concert

30 Jun 2012

The Youth Chorale and all Concert Choirs enjoyed a well attended inaugural concert at the Auburn Uniting Church, in a warm atmosphere and in opulent surroundings. It marks the first time Southern Voices has performed at this venue, and all concerned enjoyed the experience.

As with any new venue there were a few minor teething problems to sort out, but on the whole we look forward to further concerts there. Thanks to all staff, choristers and parents for a great evening of music.

Let's Sing Altogether

16 Jun 2012

The Lighthouse Church was the setting for the Training Choirs concert, which was extremely well attended and received. For many of the participants it was their first concert, and it went very well.

Youth Chorale were special guests, and their rendition of "Africa" was a highlight, as was the performance by Verseatile.

As always we are indebted to the Lighthouse Centre for their support of our organisation.

Relay for Life

26 May 2012

Once again the Youth Chorale participated in the Relay for Life, an event remembering the victims of cancer and giving hope to those fighting it. The choir performed despite wet conditions, and many choristers even did a few laps of the relay.

Thank you especially to Marita who helps to organise this event.

Girl's Night In

13 Apr 2012

Southern Voices first ever "Girl's Night In" was a great success, with a large group of pyjama-clad choristers bringing a plate and participating in a few singalongs. It was a good opportunity for girls from different venues to get to know each other, and do all those things girls do.

And eat pizza of course.

A big thank you to Cass K and all who helped run the night. It is social functions like these that add so much to Choir for a lot of the people involved, and they only happen because of the efforts put in by the choristers and staff together.

Concert Choir Autumn School

Apr 13 - 15 2012

As with our first Summer School, the Dandenong Ranges Music Council premises served as a venue for our Autumn School. This time it was the Concert Choir's turn to partake in extended singing activities and delve a little deeper into our repertoire.

Once again a big thank you to Karen for helping to facilitate the venue, and to all staff who took part. Hope fully it will be an experience the choristers treasure.

Rowville Information night

29 Mar 2012

A group of interested parents and their children attended the Rowville night, joining in musical games and having fun. Our new digs at Rowville lend themselves well to taking various groups off to have a sing.

Many thanks to our staff on these nights, when they try to inspire new faces with boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Keysborough Information night

27 Mar 2012

The halls were alive with the sound of music as an enthusiastic group of potential choristers played musical games, sang rounds and were auditioned without even knowing it. Our new format is to book in children to attend a rehearsal of the Training One level, so that interested parents can see how the Choir works.

The parents even took part in the traditional up and down version of "My Bonnie", leading to a few sore knees later.

Recruiting season!

27 Feb 2012

Yes it's that time of the year again!

Our recruiters are on the road, visiting schools and generating interest in Southern Voices. Every year many schools are called by Sally and her helpers in the office, and the recruiting is done by a dedicated and talented group of staff led by Sharon. Currently we are recruiting for our Keysborough and Rowville venues, the other venues will be targeted in Term Two.

If your child is interested in being in Southern Voices, contact the office to book into an audition rehearsal.

Office open for business

Feb 1 2012

Southern Voices is back for 2012, with many exciting and educational choral opportunities planned. We welcome Jenny Mathers to our organisation, and the wealth of experience she brings.

Several regular events will be held a little differently this year - our End-of-Year Concert has moved to a new location and a new time of year. We will send notes home well in advance with everything choristers and their parents need to know.

Our thanks in advance to all parents, choristers and members of the Choir community for their continued support. We hope you enjoy 2012!
